BOOK OF THE SEA
by Odelae

from 80.00

A functional and sculptural hand bound book. From a butter clam shell (Saxidomus giganteus) found on a beach in the Pacific Northwest.

10% of proceeds from this book are donated to organizations that protect and care for the oceans and tidelines of the Salish Sea.

FEATURES

  • Covers constructed from durable clam shell
  • Hand stitched with bees waxed linen thread in a variation of Coptic binding
  • Pages are hand cut to reflect the natural contour of the shells. Paper options are:
    • Natural white 100% recycled writing paper with approx. 180 pages counting front & back
    • Natural white 90lb cotton watercolor paper with approx. 144 pages counting front & back
  • Fits comfortably in the palm of an adult-sized hand. Please allow a range in size.
  • Book naturally spreads open as shown; book does not lay flat when opened, rather it holds the form of the shell. The binding is strong and will allow you to spread the book open to access the inner most pages with a writing utensil.
  • All journals are signed and dated. This clam shell book is an original design by Erica Ekrem, Odelae Book Arts

MADE TO ORDER This book is made to order and will ship out within 3-7 business days (depending on quantity ordered). The photos are symbolic of the book you will receive and are not the actual book. Your book may differ in color, ranging from white to pink to green or have natural imperfections such as rust, chips, barnacles, and other natural features from life in a tidal environment. Please keep these variations in mind when you purchase and allow each shell book to express a unique character.

THE ORIGIN. Read the full story about the making of Book of the Sea here.

ETHICALLY HARVESTED. The shells for these books are never taken alive. I find ones that are cast up on the beach- often broken halves that I rejoin. This book is a tactile ode to the ocean and the life within– a contemplative vessel to spark inspiration of the essential nature and imperative health of the oceans that are critical for the survival of humanity and other lifeforms.

HANDCRAFTED. All steps in the crafting of this heirloom-quality journal were approached the old world way using hand tools: awl, needle & thread, ruler, bone folders, manual hole punch & a steel blade. Made with careful consideration for the environment and a hint of magic slipped between the covers. Designed and hand-crafted in a small artist studio by Erica Ekrem on Orcas Island, USA.
