OCEANIC LIBRARY

  • Sitka Center for Art & Ecology Otis, OR (map)

OCEANIC LIBRARY / Join Erica on the Equinox for an inspiring oceanside bookbinding workshop. We will sit in tea ceremony, connect with the tides and contemplate our connection to the mother waters. Students will explore the use of natural objects (clam shells and driftwood planks) as book covers to create a biodegradable oceanic library. Students will learn to choose materials, consider ethics of material sourcing and will learn bookbinding basics such as creating text blocks, binding exposed spines, preparing and attaching covers. Students will create thematic content and apply scrimshaw treatment to the books with mixed media such as pen and ink, watercolor, typewriter, embroidery and calligraphy. Each student will create a personal oceanic library made of two to four small hand bound books.   LEARN MORE + REGISTER
